Best tourist attractions in Lisbon
SO you have made the great decision to visit the Portuguese Capital? Good choice! Be sure to make the following top priorities on your busy itinerary so that you don’t miss anything. If you are an avid traveller like me, you will know that using the Metro or Subway or Underground system normally takes most of the stress out of visiting tourist attractions, but in a place like Lisbon, it is surely preferred to rent a car the moment you step off the plane. That is to say of you prefer building a holiday from scratch and not just go for the run of the mill shoestring tour.
Torre De Belèm
A medieval tower on an island? Make sure your camera is fully charged when you visit this spot. If it is not yet on your list of things to see, take a virtual tour on the website and check out why this tower is a must see when visiting Portugal. Ideal for the romantic and the amateur photographer, hey! Even the expert will enjoy this but it is especially a great spot to play with light and contours etc.
Castelo de Sao Jorge
Have you ever watched Indiana Jones and wished you could be an archaeologist? Well, if you have, now is the time to visit the Castle of S. Jorge. Visit the archaeological site and become an expert in Portugal’s rich tapestry of a history! They have a permanent collection of artefacts that will put Indiana to shame and the actual site where the digging was done, reminds one of the infamous words of lord Carter and Carnavon when opening King Tut’s tomb, ‘Beautiful things, many beautiful things!’ Ideal for teaching the kids a bit more about how history is unearthed.
The Vasco De Gama Bridge
Get to know the rich history of one of the world’s greatest risk takers, visionaries and explorers! We all know that Vasco De Gama changed the course of the world when he first stepped onto a ship and walking in his footsteps is such an inspirational experience, you will want to do it again.
National Coach museum
16th to 19th century delicately decorated coaches? Sounds like my kind of museum, learn more about the royalty and the rich and why they decorated certain coaches in a certain way, was it for fashion reasons or safety? After visiting the museum, you will have the answer!
And last but not least:
Oceanario de Lisboa
If this is not on your list, you should tear it up and start from scratch with this destination as the first and most important thing you just have to see. Voted on Tripadvisor as the world’s best aquarium, this is one place you cannot miss. They even have workshops for educators and are pioneers in the conservation of the ocean and it’s declining numbers of certain fish. SO much more than just an aquarium, take the time to experience the Oceanario de Lisboa to it’s full potential.
