Review

SO Friday afternoon we were discussing weekend plans while having a after-work drinks at Bella Casa. After two glasses of their wonderful Sangria I was about ready to go home and sleep! But one friend inspired us to try out the butchery next to the restaurant. We did. And we were pleasantly surprised!

The first reason we decided to support a butchery is because I have my own business and so do many other people in my family. I therefor mostly try to support the one man business instead of the huge franchise. Just look at what happened with Spur, the actions of one or two really affected the many. It was about time people supported local restaurants. Why would you buy the same burger you can get in the Cape or Durban? Isn't it more spectacular to experience Na Go Ya or Stadium? Especially when you have visitors from out of town. I see absolutely no appeal in buying them something they can get in their own town, treat them to Bella Casa pasta or a New York Steak and you and your hospitality will long be talked about. Why would you get almost guaranteed terrible service at the Mugg&Bean when you can have cake and coffee at Iewers Nice? And with the same transaction, you are supporting local farmers and local businesses, a local printing place has to make sure the menus and signs are spectacular. A local farmer will be able to send his daughter to university because you didn't support a KFC where they sometimes run out of chicken... I kid you not. Drive-thru? More like honk your horn to see who is awake at the "24 hour" booth...

SO I support the one man business. More often than not. Now on Friday we were on our way to buy steaks, we were actually (to my shame) discussing if we were going to go to Pick n Pay or Spar. A friend recommended Fenwicks instead, stating that the butcher himself will help you choose the right piece of meat and then also educate you in the butchery's preparation process. The prices are real nice and the meat guaranteed soft. Repeat: Guaranteed. As in refund if not happy. This means, you are guaranteed satisfaction. Guaranteed best meat for whatever you would like to do. Dinner party for six? NO problem! Fenwicks has your back! Birthday party for sixty people? Fenwicks will sort you out!

The education part, wow. Compared to buying something from a rude cashier and shame, swiping your card for 'loyalty points' just to justify the poor service, this was absolutely a fresh breeze. It sounds as if the butcher has a science degree. But his passion, even after closing the sale, was contagious. We hopped, skipped and jumped all the way home and couldn't wait to cook together and then sit down to a lovely meal. Now, if we had gone to a huge retail store, we would have not known to open the packaging and let the steak rest for five minutes before cooking. And the whole thing would just not have been such fun. We were giggling and happy and couldn't stop talking about what a pleasant experience this was.

I can really recommend Fenwick Butchery. Five stars at least. Thank you for making meat fun! And to anyone reading this article, try it. Really. Tell the butcher what you want to do and he will make sure your meal is a next level, gourmet treat even if you are just planning an intimate BBQ for you and your spouse. Well done Fenwick Butchery and thank you. You have a loyal customer here for life!
