When is the best time to ski?

Did you know that the French Alps is home to three of the biggest ski areas in the world? If you’re like me and you did know because you love skiing, you’ll appreciate that skiing is a very seasonal sport. So when is the best time to go skiing in the Alps and why? Follow these tips to get more out of your ski holiday.

It’s not as expensive as you think!

To visit one or all three of the largest ski areas in the world, is about 60% cheaper than skiing in America. Also, the areas are interconnected and you do not need an extra pass or ticket to visit all three areas. Les Portes du Soleil has a six-day package that may interest you. Skiing in the Alps can be done on a budget!

Not just skiing

Why not try snowboarding as well? Since the season is limited (you do actually get the best snow not in December, but January-February) you can try out more than one sport when booking a ski holiday. Many resorts offer snowboarding lessons and equipment and this is an opportunity that you don’t want to miss. Don’t get caught up in something like ski.com where your options are more luxurious but also more expensive. Go for a cheaper package with more activities rather than luxury.

The locals are tourist attractions on their own

I will not go on about this too much but remember to make part of your holiday visiting the local restaurants etc. Experience a history and cultures that have been formed for the last thousand years.

Bigger is busier, not always better!

Chamonix for example, is one of the most iconic areas to ski but the resort can get extremely busy, especially when the snow starts to melt and become ice end of February. If you visit a smaller business or lodge for example your ski instructor and the other staff will not be as busy and you can get the individual attention you deserve.

The time is strange

We often not only dream of a white Christmas, but we also have more time off during December. I have said this before and I will say it again, the best time for skiing in the French Alps is during mid January. If you are more experienced, the time for fast skiing is more to the middle and end of February as the snow starts to melt and form ice. Dangerous if you are a novice, great for the connoisseur.

If you have never had a ski holiday before, the best place to be is the French Alps and the best time is January. You might be surprised to learn that sunscreen is recommended, as the sun glaring on the large snow-covered mountains can give the parts of your skin that are exposed, a nasty burn. There are many little things that might surprise you and delight you. So, don’t hesitate, book a ski holiday in the French Alps sooner rather than later!
